Primary, secondary, tertiary packaging – what is the difference

Picture1

Running a business is a complicated process. To achieve success, having a good product is not enough. Even the smallest details can have an impact on how your brand and company are perceived, and packaging is an excellent example of this.

At the most base level, it serves as a protection for what is inside, but it has many other vital functions.

Since packaging is the first thing your customers will see, it is crucial to optimize the processes behind packing products. If you aren’t a packaging expert, it may seem overwhelming at first. Primary, secondary, tertiary packaging – what is the difference?

Don’t worry – we’ve got your back! In this article, we explain how each packaging type works.

Primary packaging

When you think of standard packaging, primary packaging is typically what pops into your mind. Regardless of what product you may offer, it is important to have something to protect and preserve it. Primary packaging is the solution.

Not only does it make the handling process easier, but it also protects against any possible contamination. Simply put, primary packaging is the first layer that comes and is in direct contact with the product.

Imagine a cereal box. The plastic bag that holds it together is considered the primary packaging. Quite often, it also functions for communication purposes. While primary packaging is important, our packaging company doesn’t offer services related to it.

Secondary packaging

Selling a product means you will have to store it somewhere. Since space is usually limited, smaller products are collated into a single pack. Here is where secondary packaging and our company come in!

Let’s say you wish to purchase a 6-pack with soda. Typically, the cans would come in cardboard boxes. The container that is designed to carry and store the sodas is the secondary packaging. The packaging may come in many different forms and sizes, and it can fit varying numbers of products.

What sets it apart from different packaging types is that it always includes multiple items of a single Stock-Keeping Unit (SKU).

Secondary packaging may be:

  • Boxes
  • Padding
  • Bags
  • Paper
  • Reinforcements
  • Separators

At CHL Packaging, our primary focus is secondary packaging.

Tertiary packaging

But the fun doesn’t stop at the secondary packaging! Running a business and selling products is a complicated process that involves many steps. When you have done secondary packaging, you will most likely also need tertiary packaging.

The soda six-pack you bought probably wasn’t received by the supermarket in secondary packaging. That would add a lot of hassle to the transportation and warehousing process.

Instead, large quantities of secondary containers are combined into a single unit. Shipping boxes, pallets, and shipping crates are all used in tertiary packaging.
